Beyond And Within
Through a looking glass of longing,
We see ourselves looking back.
Smiling and waving,
At each other and ourselves.
Like a slow meandering current that is nonobtrusive and easily over looked.
We drift closer.
Pulled from opposite banks by the images in our looking glass.
Coming together.
Swirling, spinning, pooling behind ledges in small eddies,
dancing and curling back up stream.
We drift away.
The float determined by the rate of the flow.
To inevitably spill us over fast falling riffles,
depositing us on opposite banks.
Peering through our looking glass waiting for the river to rise.

This is one of the best pieces I've ever read from anyone, James. You are able to say so much in such few words. This is a mark of excellent writing and keen observation.
"The float determined by the rate of the flow." I admire how you use this visualization... and I don't think I've ever seen the word 'riffles' used before.
The feeling after reading this several times through is one of warm hope...after all, like you state- no matter where we one is in life or where two lovers may be in their relationship, all we need do is wait for "the river to rise" and carry us back to "each other and ourselves."
